KOH TAO - GETTING IN
By BUS / TRAIN: The cheapest way to travel to Koh Tao is the joint-tickets sold by various travel agencies in Bangkok as well as the bus companies themselves like Lomprayah. The price starts from 800 BTH and includes a bus ticket for Bangkok-Chumphon + Chumphon-Koh Tao ferry ticket. Usually the best idea is to buy a one-way ticket which provides more flexibility since it’s really easy to buy a return ticket from Koh Tao when it’s needed. For example, you are most likely able to buy a return ticket from Koh Tao straight for the next day and during low and medium season, it’s possible to buy tickets for a ferry leaving the same day. Ready-made solutions are available for companies like Lomprayah, Seatran and Songserm, from which the Lomprayah offers the fastest and most comfortable travelling option. Their price is a little bit higher to but many travellers say it’s worth the extra penny. Besides busses, a night train is the other rather cheap option. The train is usually a bit more expensive than the bus but it may offer better sleep. In addition, if you don’t feel like buying a joint-ticket, it is always possible to buy the bus/ train ticket at first and the ferry ticket at Chumphon.
In Koh Tao, there is also a good English-owned travel agency called Island Travel Koh Tao from where one is able to buy all sorts of tickets and ask about timetables.
If you are coming from Malaysia or Southern Thailand, take a train, bus or a direct flight to Suratthani from where you can take a ferry directly to Koh Tao or through Koh Samui/ Koh Phanang.
